Objective

Create hydraulic models for the Yahara river section between Monona and Waubesa before and after phase 1 of the sediment removal project.

Research Questions

What different flow values are needed to overtop the embankments? How do these flow rates compare to historical flow rates?

Is there significant benefits to dredging the entire channel width compared to a 50 ft section as outlined in the current plans for Phase 1?

As the city undergoes this project primarily to combat flooding, we want to hydraulically model the before and after effects of the first phase of the project to see if Dane county will be successful in mitigating flood risks. In Phase 1, the city plans to remove sediment in just a 50 ft width along the channel. We also want to look at the effects of removing sediment along the entire width of the channel to see how much more effective it is to remove sediment along the entire river bed.
